In Bukavu, many children have limited access to books and opportunities to develop a love of reading. With no public library serving the city and school libraries lacking sufficient books and reading activities, many students miss out on valuable opportunities to learn, explore their imagination, and build essential literacy skills. In response, our organization is preparing to establish a school library that will provide children with free access to books and create a welcoming space for learning and discovery.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors and our collaboration with GlobalGiving, we have raised $672 toward our $10,000 goal. We are currently identifying trainers and learners and preparing the next steps for implementation. Once activities begin, approximately 10 schools in the surrounding communities will be able to access the library free of charge. Through regular reading sessions and educational activities led by a dedicated team, children will have opportunities to strengthen their reading skills, gain knowledge, and develop confidence. Teachers and families will also be encouraged to support reading at home and at school. Although implementation has not yet begun, we are working to lay a solid foundation for a project that can benefit children over the long term.
To keep the library sustainable, we plan to work with participating schools and parents to maintain the facility, renew the book collection, and encourage continued use of the library. Our goal is not simply to provide books, but to help build a lasting reading culture among children in Bukavu. We sincerely thank every donor who has already contributed, and we are especially grateful to GlobalGiving for helping us reach supporters who believe in the power of education. We invite new donors to join us in making this project a reality. Every contribution, whatever its size, will bring us closer to our $10,000 target and help open new learning opportunities for children in South Kivu. Together, we can bring books closer to children and give more young people the chance to learn, dream, and build a brighter future.
