By Oleksandra Mishkevych | Donors' stewardship & support manager
Dear Supporters,
Thank you for your continued generosity and support.
We would like to remind you that this fundraiser is still ongoing and remains part of the EBRD Community Initiative, meaning that every donation will be matched 1:1 by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Every contribution therefore has twice the impact and helps us provide essential support to children who have lost one or both parents due to the war in Ukraine.
While this specific fundraiser has not yet closed, we would like to share an example of how donations from similar campaigns have already helped families in our care and what kind of impact your support makes possible.
Example of Impact: “Firefly” Family Psychological Camp
One of the initiatives supported through donor contributions was the “Firefly” Psychological Camp, held in the picturesque Carpathian Mountains. The camp brought together mothers and children aged 3 to 10, providing them with a safe environment to rest, recover, and participate in psychological and creative activities.
The program was specifically designed to support the emotional well-being of families affected by loss and trauma while strengthening the bond between mothers and their children.
Program Impact
The combination of psychological support and time spent in a peaceful natural environment had a significant positive effect on participants.
Children became calmer, more open, and more confident. Mothers reported reduced stress levels, improved emotional well-being, and a renewed sense of inner strength. The shared experience also helped families strengthen mutual understanding and feel the support of a caring community.
Impact Story: Oleksandr, Age 8
Oleksandr and his family live in the Kharkiv region and have remained in their home throughout the full-scale invasion. Their lives were forever changed by devastating losses. In September 2025, within the span of a single week, Oleksandr's father went missing and his grandmother passed away.
The family attended the camp hoping to improve Oleksandr’s emotional well-being and help him process the difficult experiences he had endured.
Following the camp, his mother noticed significant positive changes. Oleksandr stopped having frequent crying episodes and tantrums, became more responsive to his mother's requests, appeared calmer overall, made new friends, and deeply valued the opportunity to spend meaningful time with his mother.
When asked how she felt during the camp, Oleksandr’s mother shared:
"I felt truly cared for by the camp team — through their smiles, support, and countless acts of kindness. It was an amazing, cheerful, and wise team that provided powerful support in so many different circumstances."
Stories like Oleksandr’s demonstrate the lasting impact that donor support can have on children and families navigating grief, loss, and the challenges of war.
Thank you for helping us continue this work. With your support — and with every donation matched by the EBRD — we can continue providing children with the care, stability, and opportunities they need to heal and build their futures.
With gratitude,
Children of Heroes of Ukraine Foundation
