COVID-19 Pandemic - Thanks for Handpumps

By Huma Aslam | Project Leader

The COVID-19 pandemic brought a huge wave of unemployment, down type of trend in business and earnings in particular for the less privileged people and communities. The current inflation has also brought lot of miseries in the lives of the less privileged people and communities as well.

The last week of October 2021, ARTS Foundation installed 7 hand pumps in 5 Villages of Union Council Jhalori, Mirprukhas. These villages have badly been affected due to heavy rain flood 2020 as these villages came under of 3 to 4 feet water. The community of these villages mostly works in the factories of Karachi but COVID-19 has badly affected them as almost all the community members been released by the factories due to government SOPs and less demand of products from the market. Not only this, but the current high wave of inflation has adversely affected their purchasing power.

In these villages there was a serious issue regarding the availability of drinking water. The habitats in these regions had several diseases caused by the pollution of ponds and streams. This meant that the water that was available to drink was also polluted. The population of this area were also struggling with financial burdens of purchasing water, as well as the physical burden of fetching drinking water from distant areas.

They could not afford to install pumps themselves to access drinking water and therefore these village communities approached to ARTS Foundation to provide them handpumps.

Mr. Ali, said that due to lack of clean water, we were forced to drink contaminated water from a pond which is highly contaminated and its water was causing increased number of diarrhoea among children.

Indeed, we are very thankful to ARTS Foundation team who came in our area and provided us the facility of community level hand pumps. So, we want to convey our thanks to GlobalGiving for this support as it made through online philanthropy.
