I am a Shanti belonging to Hindu community and resident of Village Ditto Kalro and District Tando Allahyar. This is routine like other rural area parts of the surroundings, fetching water either for drinking or cleaning purposes is the sole responsibility of women and girls. So, the same way, women and girls of Village Ditto Kalro are responsible to fetch water for daily consumption of the families. The heavy monsoon flood of 2020 has badly affected the economy of rural communities and they could not grow the season’s crops even. The flood has demolished and damaged our sources of water including Hand Pumps. Even before flood 2020, the village women and girls were fetching water from a distance of 500 meter to 1000 meters from their houses as a Hand Pump was installed by a landlord at his lands. Because there was no Hand Pump due to lack of purchasing power of the poor community who use to work in agriculture lands on daily wages. And neither the local government i.e. Union Council nor any individual philanthropist or any non-government organization (NGO) has provided the Hand Pump. But after flood 2020, the community had only the source of drinking water which was the canal and it was located more than 1500 meters from the houses because the landlords Hand Pump came under flood water and later on it has been non-functional.
The installation of hand pumps is benefiting in numerous means like less burden on women and girls, increased leisure time for women and girls, improved health and hygiene condition of women and girls. A total of 37 families are getting benefit from the installation of Hand Pumps in Village Ditto Kalro.
