Dear Freinds,
It may not be summer, but I want to tell you about July.
July – like so many spcaLA shelter pets – withstood cruelty. Unlike others, it was aimed at her owner.
Domestic abusers hurt or threaten the lives of pets to maintain control. An effective strategy – most DV shelters can only house humans. spcaLA’s Animal Safety Net (ASN)™ allows us to provide free care and safe shelter to pets like July.
While we work to reunite survivors and their animals, it is not always feasible. July’s owner asked spcaLA to find the sweet, scruffy, deaf Terrier a new home.
Despite her violent past, July was friendly and smart. We put her to work with youth in Teaching Love and Compassion (TLC)™, our violence-prevention program.
July helped her students practice patience, compassion, and empathy, while they helped her learn basic obedience.
She formed such a close bond with one of her students that he and his family came back this summer to adopt July!
Thank you,
Madeline Bernstein
President, spcaLA
