This project seeks to address the urgent need for Anti-retroviral Therapy (ART) for 4000 children under the age of five living with HIV in Mashonaland East, Zimbabwe. Following the freezing of aid by the U.S. under President Donald Trump, critical funding for the HIV/AIDS program has been significantly reduced, leaving thousands of children without access to life-saving treatment.
Mashonaland East has an estimated 139, 450 people living with HIV, with children under the age of five being one of the most vulnerable groups. ART coverage of children in the province stands at 68% significantly lower than the 87% coverage for adults. The freezing of U.S. aid particularly through PEPFAR ( President's Emergency Plan For Aids Relief), has disrupted the supply of Anti-retroviral drugs, diagnostic tools, and support for health workers.
The project will strengthen ART access through the establishment of mobile clinics to reach remote areas in Mashonaland East ensuring that children under 5 have access to ART and diagnostic services. We are going to partner with health facilities to provide free ART drugs and viral load testing for children.
The project will improve health outcomes by providing ART to 4000 children and will also significantly reduce HIV-related mortality and morbidity ensuring that these children can lead healthy reproductive lives. The project will build local capacity to manage pediatric HIV, creating a sustainable framework for future health interventions.
