Project Report: Donate to 4000 Victims of HIV/AIDS Aid Freeze in Zimbabwe
Organization: The Sustainable World Zimbabwe Trust
Reporting Period: June 2025
Location: Mashonaland East, Zimbabwe
Project Overview
This project addresses the urgent need for life-saving Anti-retroviral Therapy (ART) for 4,000 children under the age of five living with HIV in Mashonaland East, Zimbabwe. The freezing of U.S. aid, particularly through PEPFAR, under the Trump administration has led to significant funding gaps, endangering the lives of vulnerable children by disrupting access to ART, diagnostic tools, and health worker support.
Progress Update Initial Mobilization
Over the last four months, The Sustainable World Zimbabwe Trust has:
Conducted a needs assessment across five rural districts.
Identified 2,050 HIV-positive children under the age of five in urgent need of ART.
Established partnerships with 3 rural health centers and 2 mission hospitals to serve as ART distribution points.
Mobile Clinics Framework
We have successfully:
Procured and refurbished one mobile clinic van.
Trained 8 community health workers in pediatric ART management and data reporting.
Piloted outreach visits to 10 remote villages, delivering basic check-ups, HIV tests, and ART for 280 children.
Diagnostic Support
Through donated test kits, we conducted:
510 HIV tests for children.
174 viral load tests to monitor progress for those already on ART.
Challenges Encountered
Limited funding delayed the purchase of a second mobile unit.
Difficult terrain and poor road conditions hindered access to some remote communities.
Drug stock-outs at partner clinics due to broader supply chain disruptions.
Impact to Date
Despite limited resources, we have:
Provided life-saving ART to 740 children in Mashonaland East.
Reduced ART stockout risk in participating clinics through coordinated supply delivery.
Built trust and engagement in underserved communities, increasing caregiver awareness of the importance of early HIV diagnosis.
Next Steps
In the coming quarter, we aim to:
Deploy a second mobile clinic unit.
Extend services to two additional districts in the province.
Train an additional 12 health workers and equip them with mobile data collection tools.
Launch an awareness campaign targeting caregivers, traditional leaders, and church communities.
Appreciation
We sincerely thank our donors and supporters for making this life-saving work possible. Although we are just beginning, your contributions have already given hundreds of children a second chance at life. With your continued support, we are confident in reaching our full target of 4,000 children.
