Global Medic Force's work in Vietnam

By Katie Graves-Abe | Director of Operations

Global Medic Force initially deployed to Vietnam in 2002. Since then Vietnam has continued to play a pivotal roll in Global Medic Force’s operational strategies in Asia. With a population in excess of 88 million people, Vietnam is the 13th largest nation on earth and the second fastest growing economy in Asia Pacific.

Primary healthcare issues that Global Medic Force clinical mentors confront in Vietnam are extremely varied. They range from infectious diseases such as food and waterborne diseases (i.e. cholera), hepatitis, dengue fever, malaria, tuberculosis, Japanese encephalitis, plague and water contact diseases to cardiovascular and internal medicine conditions (i.e. angina, hypertension, diabetes etc) as well as acute emergency conditions (i.e. motorcycle accident caused head traumas).

During the last 8 years Global Medic Force clinical mentors have deployed both in major cities as well as in rural areas home to all main ethnic groups in Vietnam including the Kinh (Viet), Tay, Thai, Muong, Khome, Hoa, Nun, Hmong, and other numerous other remote minority groups.

All Global Medic Force clinical mentors returning from deployment in Vietnam describe their assignment as the most full-filling professional experience of their careers due to the exceptional nature of the Vietnamese people. Global Medic Force is continuing to rapidly expand its operations in Vietnam in a new paradigm initiative designed to permanently reduce the developing world’s dependence on Western healthcare charity.
