TAKE A MINUTE AND READ YOU MAY BE INSPIRED

By Eric Omwanda Nehemiah | Executive Director

Mathare Foundation has been on the forefront in implementing projects. It has not been that easy for us though. To date we have implemented different 20 project since 2013. This includes Raising Voices, Creativity StARTS Here (Photography and Music) among others.

We have been able to impact skills to about 5,000 young people in Mathare slums and its environs. They have acquired skills in photography, performing arts (dance and music) and sports. In terms of our audience we have reached out to a milllion viewers through social media and mainstream media locally and internationally.

It has been a difficult period for us as an organization since October 2020 to date. We have been able to do very minimum activities as compared to the previous years. The contributing factors are the Presidential announcement in Kenya which restricted us from carrying out activities since nationally we were supposed to adhere to COVID 19 restrictions set by World Health Organization and Ministry of Health in Kenya. The rules have been now relaxed since 1st May 2021. This means we can carry out our activities in line with the revised rules such as reducing the number of participants, wearing masks and hand washing. As an organization, we were faced with a very difficult moment since the donor world shrined and we did not have any funds to implement our projects. We learnt that we should have funds in our reserves so that when rainy days come we can be able to deal with that. Currently, we have some organizational debts that we need to clear.

POSTIVE OUTCOMES

We have developed 3 proposals and submitted to three different organizations

Our programmes have now resumed

We are developing more policies for the organization

Challenges

Inadequate resources to implement our programmes

The organizational debts may create hatred between us and the lenders

Some of the participants in the programmes have resorted to substance abuse while others have been impregnated during this time of COVID 19 since our programmes were not very active as usual for almost 6 months.
