On August 25th Hurricane Harvey came ashore in Texas. On August 29th, Hurricane Harvey's eye was still circling south Texas. Between 25 and 30 percent of Houston's Harris County was flooded. That is an area as large as New York City and Chicago combined. It was home to 4.5 million people. Throughout that time Trusted World sprung into action- being named as “the” charity to handle the donation management of Harvey relief here in Dallas. This community came together in ways that most of us have never seen before- completely shutting down lanes of the Dallas North Tollway access road as people lined up to give aid to those affected.
By the first of September, the community outpouring was so great that Trusted World found a temporary location and moved into the Apex Tool Warehouse. 340,000 square feet of empty warehouse became Trusted World's temporary headquarters. As a point of reference, the average Walmart is 104,000 square feet, and we had gathered over three times that in donations for Harvey relief. Over 16,000 volunteers filed in to help sort, pack, load, and deliver supplies to the affected areas. It was people like you that made this all happen.
Even today, we are still providing resources to the affected areas. It can take up to 3 years to recover from a flood. And, Trusted World is committed to being there. Some people just lost their home; others lost their home and their job. Trusted World is committed to continuing to provide the resources needed well after the flood waters recede.
It’s easy for us to think that once coverage fades from the news that the work is complete. But it’s just starting. Not only will we continue to support Harvey victims for the foreseeable future, but we will also continue to help the victims of the daily disasters we see individuals have to deal with every week right here in the DFW area. The better prepared we can be for the situations that face those less fortunate than us, the faster we can help them get back on their feet.
