Feeding San Diego Spring Update

By Rachel Lee Taylor | Development Manager

Fuel for Summer
Fuel for Summer

Feeding San Diego is reaching the end of our fiscal year, however, our efforts to fight hunger in our area never stop. Feeding San Diego reaches the one in eight adults and one in six children affected by hunger by distributing healthy food (an average of 50 percent fresh produce) through safe and dependable programs. Among those we serve are families struggling with the high cost of living in San Diego, seniors who live on fixed incomes, and children who cannot concentrate in school because they have not had a nutritious meal since yesterday.

At Feeding San Diego, we are committed to solving hunger in our community through pioneering programs and extensive collaborations that result in safe, equitable, and reliable food distributions. Distributions are provided through a variety of methods, including, but not limited to:

  • Children’s programs: School Pantries, Back Pack parcels, school break distributions, after-school program meals for K-12 students
  • Young adult programs: Pantries at community college sites across the county
  • Family programs: Mobile Pantries in rural areas, military-family targeted distributions
  • Senior programs: Senior center distributions, healthcare partnerships

Fuel for Summer

As summer begins, Feeding San Diego will launch our annual Fuel for Summer campaign. The campaign, running from May 16-June 30, serves children and families during the summer months — a time that often sees a rise in food insecurity, as parents of children who rely on government-subsidized programs must find replacements for the meals their children receive during the academic year.

Last year, Fuel for Summer raised the funds to provide more than 1.3 million meals. More than 25,000 of these meals and snacks were served to children at 16 sites throughout the county, including libraries and community centers. In addition to these daily meals for children, Feeding San Diego provided more than 55,000 pounds of free produce throughout the summer months in partnership with the San Diego Unified School District. Through these programs and other distributions, our community ensured that these children and families could enjoy the summer, free from the fear of empty pantries.

This summer, Feeding San Diego is committed to providing more than a million meals during 2019’s Fuel for Summer campaign.

Thank you for being a supporter of Feeding San Diego’s efforts to building a healthy and hunger-free San Diego. We appreciate the partnership of our community champions in our work to fight hunger, year round.
