Following this report, we will update the project to reflect the year 2021. However, we will not erase and start a new project, given that so many of our donors are generous enough to be recurring for this initiative and their donations will continue to go to the same cause in 2021.
Dignity Pack distribution was done very differently in 2020, given that these packs had been given out in schools prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. Yet throughout 2020, the funds were used to continue to assist adolescent girls and young women with sanitary pads, and also to provide hygiene items to all young people who needed it, with an added focus on sanitizer. Dignity Pack were given out at food distribution initiatives throughout 2020, as opposed to in schools, where they had previously been distributed. This did make it more difficult to identify those most in need, given that the school guidance and teachers, in partnership with peer supporters, were the ones to identify those most in need when schools were open. With schools closed, we were forced to use a more broad approach in order to not let children or youth fall through the cracks, and that was to distribute to everyone who was receiving food parcels as part of the emergency response project.
Due to the high volume of food parcels given out through various distributions throughout 2020, we were not able to provide dignity packs at every distribution event. However, for the last distribution in December of 2020, all Moya beneficiaries were given dignity packs with their food parcels. The funding for this came from this GlobalGiving fundraiser as well as through two other funding sources.
As we move forward and revitalize this project for 2021, a time when schools will (hopefully) be reopening, we plan to put a stronger focus on adolescent girls and young women, and ensuring this population has sanitary pads every month. This does not mean that our students in need, both male and female, will not receive dignity packs, it only means that we would like to make sure our girls have what they need, as we know that sanitary pads are one of the most, if not the most crucial part of these dignity packs. At the end of 2020, we conducted a research project among a large sample of our beneficiaries where we asked them about what it is they really need, and the challenges they still face. We will use this data to update the dignity packs project to best fit into what we’d like to achieve through the project in 2021-22. As a CBO, we must continuously assess the needs of our communities and find clever, sustainable ways to fulfill those needs, and we need to make sure we are not wasting resources.
Once we analyze the data from our recent research, we will be able to appropriately update the Dignity Pack project, and we look forward to sharing that with you. This project has, by far, the most recurring donors, and we can’t thank you enough for that. There is no project that needs recurring donations more than this one.
