Thank you to all of our sustaining donors & those who have just found our campaign — we are thrilled to have you all on board. Here’s a general overview of where we stand with Digitizing Cultural Heritage & Historic Sites in Venezuela.
Our work on the San Rafael de Mucuchíes Chapel, built by Juan Félix Sánchez from 1980 - 1984, is still on hold for the moment as we wait for the rainy season in Venezuela to pass. Once the weather permits (probably around February) our volunteer photographers will travel back to the chapel in order to capture details & angles of the structure we may have missed before. A completed model is still on track to be finished by mid 2019.
Our work with the Dancing Devils of Corpus Christi continues in Yare, Venezuela. The Venezuelan manifestations of the Dancing Devils of Corpus Christi were recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012. Our rough solves of the House of Culture of Yare, Plaza Bolívar de Yare & San Francisco de Paula Church are on track to be completed by mid 2019, as we are waiting on our volunteer photographers to return to the area to photograph more details & angles. We are now working on completing solves of cultural items like masks, mask molds, percussion instruments, costumes, and more (see attached photos for our first round of models!) but will need our photographers to travel back to Yare in the coming months in order to do reshoots. We are hoping to have these completed by next summer.
Our talks with the Palace of the Academies in Caracas, an essential building that headquarters 4 other National Academies within the country, are still underway. These academies all house significant documents, sculptures, paintings, and antique furniture. We have the permits and the interest of the director of the Palace of the Academies. We have worked with them on the logistics, on the team, and are almost ready to start. The people at the Academies are defining a list of 50 objects/documents/artworks to shoot. Since they will be closed from next week until January 10th, the activities are scheduled to start in mid-January.
We have begun our workshops in El Calvario barrio. The community members of the town have chosen which iconic cultural artifacts/structures/statues to capture, and we are in the process of receiving images of these items in order to create 3D models. They have chosen the Grotto of the Virgin Mary, Plaza de la Cruz, a local bodega and a cooperativa, the Maria May school facade, and so much more. They are having an open house for the community in late December where we are expected to show some of the initial photogrammetry solves on a projector in front of the community and to visitors. It's called "El Calvario Puertas Abiertas" (Open doors to El Calvario). We will be spending the next month completing these models, and will be sharing in the early months of the New Year.
