Following the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10, 2026, this project helps 50 social, cultural and educational organizations affected in the regions of Choco, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, and Caldas, by providing digital recovery support for equipment, connectivity and data, alongside training in digital continuity. By helping those who help, the project will enable affected organizations to restore operations and continue supporting their communities.
The recent earthquake severely affected communities, including social, cultural and educational organizations. As affected areas move toward recovery, organizations need support to restore and strengthen digital capacities required to resume operations. When organizations lose technology, data, or connectivity, their ability to serve their communities and sustain livelihoods is disrupted. Supporting their recovery contributes to the long-term recovery and development of affected communities.
Makaia will support 50 earthquake-affected civil society organizations through a two-phase approach. First, organizations will receive needs-based digital recovery grant support for equipment, connectivity, data, and software to restore operations. Second, staff will receive practical training and technical assistance in digital working tools, continuity, cybersecurity, and data protection, enabling organizations to strengthen their digital resilience and better withstand future disruptions.
The project will help affected organizations restore operations while strengthening their digital resilience for future disruptions. By equipping staff with practical skills, continuity plans, backup systems or cybersecurity practices, organizations will be better prepared to protect critical information and maintain essential services. Makaia's local partnerships and experience in the affected regions will also create opportunities to sustain and expand this model beyond the six-month project.
