The pandemic has closed schools in India for 18 months, yet, our design-teams have been hard at work re-making outdoor sports pitches for children to play football, volleyball, cricket, in downtown Mumbai, Maharashtra. In India's most crowded city it might seem as if there are no places to play. If you look hard enough and ask the city Government, it seems there are in fact very large potential places for children to play team sports together - downtown - just where you'd never expect.
With an MoU with the City Government, Going to School's Sustainable Architects have mapped and re-designed three places to play. Surrounded by vertical urban farms, made of local red earth and lit at night by solar, three plans have been approved so far to make real.
The monsoon has arrived. We'd love to get building and making before school re-opens in September, so when children come back to school for the first time in almost two years, they'll be able to action their design-thinking skills to take on th next global challenge: Climate Change.
