In the heart of India's rural villages, the Desai Foundation's Heroes for Humanity program stands as a beacon of hope, actively addressing the myriad challenges faced by many individuals, primarily women and children. This innovative initiative is dedicated to empowering marginalized communities by providing tailored support, skills development, health screenings, and opportunities for healing and resilience.

The Heroes for Humanity program, initially launched as a COVID-19 disaster relief initiative in 2021, has since evolved into a comprehensive platform delivering the Desai Foundation's regular programming.  Since the start of this program, we have employed over 1,000 heroes, primarily women, in rural communities to serve as agents of hope and change. They not only earn a livelihood themselves, but also promote programs that provide livelihood opportunities to others.

This program encompasses a multifaceted approach to empowerment, encompassing the following key elements:

1. Health Screenings and Camps

Our Heroes for Humanity serve as dedicated agents of health within their communities. Through this program, we conduct health screenings and health camps, ensuring that women and girls receive essential medical attention and preventive care. This vital aspect of the program contributes not only to their physical well-being but also to their overall empowerment. From July 2022 to July 2023, we have reached more than 79,000 individuals with primary health and hygiene programs.

2. Menstrual Health Education

Limited awareness and resources often lead to poor menstrual hygiene management among rural women and girls. Through Heroes for Humanity, we provide comprehensive menstrual health education, addressing taboos and misconceptions, and equipping women and girls with the knowledge they need to lead healthier lives. From July 2022 to July 2023, we have reached more than 106,000 individuals with menstrual health and hygiene awareness camps.

3. Financial Literacy Programs

The Heroes for Humanity program also conducts informative training sessions on basic financial literacy and banking education within the community. These sessions empower women with the skills to manage their businesses and finances effectively. Moreover, conducting these training sessions contributes to our Heroes' experience and growth while enhancing our communities' economic stability.  From July 2022 to July 2023, our financial literacy classes have reached over 444,000 individuals, enabling them to make informed financial decisions.

4. Help Desk Program

The Help Desk program, an integral part of the Heroes for Humanity initiative, bridges government social protection schemes and the community. Our ground staff, Community Facilitators and Community Facilitators for Health work tirelessly in their communities to ensure the accessibility of government social protection schemes and essential documents like Aadhar cards, ration cards, and Krishi cards. The Help Desk program works as an enabler to bridge the gap between the law and the government's actions faster and more efficiently. The objectives of the Help Desk program include:

  • Creating awareness and knowledge about government schemes and basic documents through workshops and sessions.
  • Becoming a bridge between the system and the community by collecting beneficiary information and interlinking beneficiary data with documents and schemes.
  • By instilling these values and objectives in the villages and their people, we aim to transform them into models for others. To date, the Help Desk program has reached over 1.5 million people, facilitating access to essential government services and documents.

The Heroes for Humanity program goes beyond direct beneficiaries, making a profound impact on the broader community. By empowering women to earn a livelihood and educating them about crucial health and hygiene practices, our heroes become catalysts for positive change within their communities. The program's reach has extended to over 2 million individuals in the last three months, elevating awareness and access to vocational training, expanding employment opportunities, and improving economic conditions in the region and the nation.

Case Study - Miss Lavanya

A shining example of the impact of the Heroes for Humanity program is Miss Lavanya, a 16-year-old from Kallavasal, Virudhunagar District, Tamil Nadu. Her story epitomizes the program's transformative potential. Motivated by a desire to contribute to her family's financial well-being and acquire valuable skills, Lavanya enrolled in our sewing skill training program during her school holidays.

After just one month of training, Lavanya gained proficiency in stitching basic designs. Her enthusiasm and dedication to learning were remarkable. The guidance and support provided by the Heroes for Humanity program played a pivotal role in her progress, further fueling her determination to excel in this skill. Lavanya expresses her heartfelt gratitude to the Desai Foundation Trust for affording her this invaluable opportunity to learn and enhance her life.
