Livelihood Opportunities for Women in Rural India - Campaign Update Report
January 2024 to March 2024
In 2024, women in rural India continue to grapple with various barriers to entering the economy as they confront disproportionate challenges in access to opportunity. For women across the world, livelihood opportunities have been notably hindered by the weight of domestic responsibilities and a variety of societal expectations for women. In rural India, traditional taboos and regional accessibility challenges exacerbate these challenges for women, resulting in limited opportunities to acquire essential skills. Without adequate investment in their potential and meaningful integration into formal economic structures, many women in these regions find themselves ensnared in a cycle of poverty perpetuated by gender disparities.
The Desai Foundation recognizes the multifaceted ways in which providing training and employment opportunities builds confidence, fosters dignity, and empowers women. Through skills training in sewing, beauty parlor skills, entrepreneurship development, computer literacy, and more, our programs are enhancing the capacity and employability of women and girls in rural India. The Desai Foundation’s approach is holistic, as we empower community facilitators to provide livelihood programs that equip women with the resources needed to engage in the workforce.
Heroes for Humanities Program:
Heroes for Humanity (HFH) emerged as a COVID recovery initiative and has since evolved into a robust distribution mechanism for the Desai Foundation's programs. Since its inception, our Heroes have worked to deliver essential services to their local rural communities. To date, we have trained over 1,000 Heroes, serving as primary facilitators implementing our livelihood programming on the ground. Our Heroes—predominantly women—serve as beacons of hope and catalysts for change, with the program not only sustaining their livelihoods but championing programs that offer economic opportunities to others.
Program Impact:
Since its inception, our livelihood programs have impacted over 1 Million women in India, with initiatives in the past 3 months changing the lives of another 13,190 individuals. With our Heroes for Humanity program becoming a central pillar of their communities, relied on for their knowledge and resources. They are disseminating key information about the Desai Foundation's vocational programs and changing the lives of many.
Beyond economic empowerment, the Desai Foundation's project encompasses broader social and physical well-being for both participants and their communities. Our approach increases participation in the economy while addressing crucial issues such as women's health, discrimination, human rights, and self-sufficiency. As a key component of our skilled training, HFH has extended the impacts of our programs by providing a range of crucial services to traditionally underserved communities. In 2024 alone, our Heroes have reached more than 1,000 women through our Career Guidance, Personality Development, and Saving Education & Awareness Programs. These initiatives work to expand upon our beneficiaries' skill sets, providing insight into sustainable business practices that allow our women to foster livelihood opportunities extending far beyond the completion of our livelihood programs.
The numbers below demonstrate the specific impact of various programs during this period.
Programs and Participation Data:
From January 2024 to March 2024, the Desai Foundation conducted various programs with significant participation:
Indirect Benefits
Since the start of 2024, these initiatives have indirectly affected more than 77,826 individuals. When assessing our programs, we try to understand their larger indirect impact as women's empowerment and increased agency positively affect our beneficiaries' families and the larger community. Furthermore, seeing the expansive nature of our livelihood programs, we know that the success of one often leads to the success of others, as heightened awareness and accessibility to vocational training play an even larger role in expanding employment opportunities and enhancing economic conditions for those most in need.
The recent impact figures serve as a testament to our foundation's progress in reaching and empowering women in a multitude of vocational programs. At the Desai Foundation, our endeavors play a pivotal role in improving economic conditions for women across rural India.
