January was very sad month in our organization, we lost three of our clients, due to inappropriate health care. Two of them struggled with the cancer. The hospital sent them back to "home" to recover. But what if somebody does not have any home. Fortunatelly, we do run the shelter for ill people, but with insuficient capacity. More shelters like this one is needed.
Access to health care for homeless people is very limited, they are treated only in case of the danger of death. The problem is that many of homeless people do have the debts on the health insurance, sometimes due to byrocratic steps.
As the reaction, the Shelter of St. Louise was established in 2010 for ill homeless people. Last year we helped more than 30 people to find them the place, where they can live (usually it is a house for older people, retired people).
One of the clients that left us in January was Terézia, she used to live in the deep shaft, with almost no any light. When she was not answering to our colleagues from the field work, they decided to ask the firemen to pull out her from he shaft. She left the hospital with the diagnosis of cancer, to recover at home, but you cannot consider the shaft to be proper place to get healthy. Terézia spent last days at the Shelter of st. Louise de Marillac.
