The weather in Livingstone is very hot these days, over 100°! We are happy that the two wells continue to support the crops that are now being harvested which include kale, eggplant and a popular small, white eggplant called impwa. This little white eggplant looks so much like an egg that I wonder if that is how the vegetable got its name.
The young zucchini, green beans and fresh corn will all be ready for harvesting within the next month. Sales are brisk at the town market and whatever is brought to the village is always sold. The young zucchini, green beans and fresh corn will all be ready for harvesting within the next month.
The “village chickens”, that we call “free range” chickens have increased over the months and are laying eggs even in this heat.
We continue to support the family of our retired matriarch, Rosemary, by supplying vegetables from the farm, and some grocery supplies. She continues to care for her 24 year-old granddaughter who has cerebral palsy and has always lived with her grandmother. This is becoming more difficult as Rosemary ages.
The farm has stabilized and we are concentrating our efforts on sending some of the older students to higher level education in the fields of their choice. Two of our students are getting degrees in early childhood education and have another is taking courses in human resource management and also has two more years
to graduation. The nephew of one of the farm women is studying electrical engineering in Livingstone and is in his final semester. Tryphonia has received a degree in agriculture.
Education has always been what every parent fervently wants for their children. Until recently, this was possible for only 20% of the population. These days, The newly reelected Zambian president continues to support education, school, lunches, and programs for poor farmers as well as continuing a countrywide installation of solar electrical and water installations. Finally, Zambia has a leader who truly cares for the poor and strives to improve the country’s infrastructure.
