First, our sincere thanks to everyone who helped us succeed in the Open Challenge and earn a permanent place on Global Giving. The outpouring of support was a great Christmas and New Year's gift all in one for our foundation.
Our total donations to date through Global Giving on this project are $7981, and coupled with donations sent directly to the foundation as a result of this appeal, we have in fact reached our goal of $8625, to deliver 75 healthy babies at the Maison de Naissance (Home of Birth) clinic in Torbeck, Haiti!
We have received our first disbursement of funds, and sent them to the clinic, where we continue to deliver an average of 5 babies every 2 days! While it is true that the cost of all of the appointments (prenatal, delivery, postpartum, HIV/AIDS testing, family planning, and well baby) to ensure a healthy baby is $115, there are other costs associated with keeping a clinic running 24 x 7, 365 days a year, such as fuel for vehicles ($4-6 per gallon), vehicle maintenance, administration, accounting, licensure fees, facility maintenance, etc., so please keep our mission to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in impoverished communities in mind.
As of the end of 2012, although the exact stats are still being compiled for Nov and Dec, we have now delivered over 4200 babies, without a single maternal mortality!
Best wishes to all for 2013!
