Background: TB Alert India is implementing a Tuberculosis Unit in a slum area named Burari in North Delhi. Area is densely populated and highly prone to TB due to migration, poor hygiene, low nutrition level and poor ventilation. Govt. health facilities are 15km away from Burari. TB Alert India is implementing Delhi Divine Project with support of Lilly foundation facilitated through United Way World Wide.

Objective and Approch: To increase identification of TB cases in the area through awareness generation and active engagement of community and supplement RNTCP.Community centric approach of the project focuses on creating demand to TB testing services of RNTCP through active Community Engagement as important stakeholders in combating TB. Awareness Generation, referring TB symptomatic for testing, ensure they get tested, treatment adherence monitoring (of people put on DOTs) and ensure their treatment completion are key roles played. Stakeholders include active community members, CBOs, Cured patients, and Private Medical Practitioners who are not fully qualified, and local leaders. Continued Community Engagement is ensured through regular reviews, monitoring and re-planning meetings

Impact:  Model could successfully increase number of people put on treatment from 157 before project initiation to 423 in one year time. At present on an average 700 people are being put on treatment every year.  In total about 10,611 TB symptomatic were tested in the DMCs. Around 2998 were diagnosed with TB and put on DOTs, 2198 have been cured/completed treatment (472 people with TB are still taking treatment). Near about 42% of the referrals tested at the DMCs is contribution of community stakeholders. Around 439 community stakeholders are actively contributing to RNTCP. About 31,136 community members are made aware about TB and related aspects

Conclusion: Sensitizing community about TB and role they can play will have magnified effect. With increased capacities stakeholders relate well with national program and are more likely to help others in their community combat the disease
