Your support will catalyze our ability to increase funding, improve training and better equip SOTENI's AIDS Barefoot Doctors (ABDs) in Kenya. ABDs are community health workers dedicated to destigmatizing and supporting people living with HIV/AIDS in underserved, remote villages in rural Kenya. It will provide ABDs with expertise and tools needed as we strive to reach 5,000 people through social support, education and connections to basic needs, like clean water, and ultimately end AIDS by 2030.
3,000 people die every day from AIDS-related illnesses. Kenya has the fourth-largest HIV/AIDS epidemic in the world, with 1.6 million people living with HIV. Kenya's HIV epidemic is driven by sexual transmission and it affects all sections of the population, including children, young people, & adults - women & men. As of 2015, 660,000 children were orphaned by AIDS. SOTENI's AIDS Barefoot Doctors aim to break the multi-generational cycle of AIDS and make AIDS orphans a thing of the past.
It takes a village to raise a child and it definitely takes one to break the multigenerational cycle of AIDS. In 2018, SOTENI served more than 16,000 people living with HIV/AIDS through support groups, education, clean drinking water, health clinic, empowerment center, small farming, orphan sponsorship and partnerships. SOTENI's community-responsive approach allows each village to have different programs based on their need & clean water boosts immunity to disease and receptivity to medication.
Through SOTENI's innovative and effective AIDS Barefoot Doctors program, we empowered tens of thousands of people affected by HIV/AIDS to break the chain of infection and poverty. SOTENI is actively working to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Three as it relates to AIDS. This means ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Through sharing our approach, we aspire to be the best in class model for others in preventing AIDS in vulnerable communities around the world. Come join us!
