Dare to Care Kentucky COVID-19 Response (46424)

By Jill Luckett | Grants Manager

COVID-19 Response through June 30
COVID-19 Response through June 30

Dare to Care used this generous gift from Ford Motor to support the increased need of food across Kentuckiana and help implement new service models aimed to keep staff, volunteers, and clients safe as we responded to the COVID-19 crisis.

Our service area (Kentuckiana), at the height of the increase, saw a 29% rise in food assistance need. This funding helped Dare to Care increase our outreach and service to meet that need.

Dare to Care continued our operations and serving individuals, families, and seniors who relied on our food, while adjusting our models of service as needed. We prioritized the health and safety of our community, volunteers, and staff, and we took extra precautions to respond to increased food needs throughout the COVID-19 crisis.

COVID-19 Response (since March 16th):

  • Distributed over 8.5 million pounds of nonperishable items and fresh produce at 185 of our partner distribution centers, pantries, and kitchens that have remained in operation and have been employing a drive-through food box models or social distancing to help ensure the safety of clients.
  • Provided over 51,000 “Grab & Go” meals to our 16 Kids Café sites which were able to remain open. Kids Cafes typically prepare hot meals children 18 and under on weeknights at 32 after-school programs.
  • During the months March – June, Dare to Care packed and delivered more than 40,000 emergency food boxes, targeting home-bound seniors. This was made possible by the help of over 1,000 volunteers, including the Kentucky National Guard.
  • Delivered over 1 million pounds of food with our Mobile Pantry to targeted neighborhoods in need. Our Mobile Pantry continued to serve our community by switching to a food box model to allow for safe distribution.

On behalf of the board of directors and staff of Dare to Care Food Bank, thank you for your support of our efforts to provide food and hope to people in need, especially during this time of crisis.
