Most of you know that our friend Danny Michel was recently nominated for a Juno Award in the category of World Music Album of the Year. In the countdown to the awards, students made good-luck posters and posted a new one every day on the school Facebook. Danny and the Garifuna Collective are always winners in our books!
So many great things happen every month in our busy little school that it's hard to pick just three to share in this report. Your support, through Danny Michel, makes all the difference.
Earth Day: April 22 the entire student body spent the day volunteering in the Forest Reserve at the northern tip of Caye Caulker. We cleared trails, watered mangrove and littoral forest seedlings, and collected garbage off the beaches.
Shark-Tagging: Dr. Rachel Graham of the Belize Shark Project taught marine-biology students how to use a GPS, depth sounder, collect data, bait a long-line and set-up an underwater camera. The group didn't catch any sharks to tag but did swim with 21 Southern Sting Rays and 4 Nurse Sharks.
Science Fair: Naked Eggs? Colour-changing milk? Exploding bottles? Ocean Academy students led hands-on experiments and demonstrations for preschool and primary school children, as well as community adult visitors and tourists.
