What is the OA Ubuntu Event? Ubuntu is a South African word that means “I am because we are.” Ocean Academy students adopted this concept for an National Innovation Challenge in 2016 to represent the important role that mentors play in educating Ocean Academy students. OA students earned first place in that Innovation Challenge that asked them how education could be more engaging for young people. We created an annual Ubuntu event to honour those mentors who give so much of their time, skills and heart to the education of Caye Caulker's youth.
In addition to thanking mentors, the event has grown to represent an important showcase for many of the “real-world immersion” activities that O.A. students enjoy. Primary School students and parents in Standards IV, V, and VI (ages 10-12) attend the event as a class to experience interactive booths led by O.A. students. We set up on the Front Street beachfront so that community members and visitors could also tour booths and interact with our students.

Our Ubuntu event is a wonderful public opportunity to thank our local mentors and internship businesses. We also keep you, our international sponsors and Danny Michel fans in our thoughts during this day and thank each of you for your ongoing support. Perhaps you will be able to join us on Caye Caulker for next year's Ubuntu?!
