By Chase Williams | Senior Program Manager, Disaster Response
Thank you—we cannot express our gratitude enough. In May 2023, Cyclone Mocha caused significant devastation in Myanmar. Your generosity is fueling relief and recovery efforts led by trusted nonprofit organizations in GlobalGiving’s vetted network of partners.
The storm killed nearly 200 people and affected more than one million people in areas already grappling with civil war, internal displacement, and precarious economic conditions. The damages were especially severe in Rakhine State in western Myanmar. For example, nearly all buildings in the city of Sittwe suffered significant damage. In total, more than 200,000 homes are estimated to need repair. Cyclone Mocha’s short-term and long-term effects are now exacerbating an already critical and dangerous situation for many communities in poverty and at risk of violence.
Together with more than 1,100 other people from around the world, you helped to raise $50,000 to support storm relief and recovery. Despite the challenging circumstances for nonprofit organizations to operate in Myanmar, your generous support powered flexible grants to trusted and vetted nonprofit organizations at the forefront of this crisis in some of the most storm-affected areas of the country. Here is a short summary of that work:
Thank you for your donation. Your support of the Cyclone Mocha Relief Fund is advancing community-led relief and recovery.
This fund is now closed and is no longer accepting donations. This will be the last fund report of this kind from our team. You can stay connected with our work through Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and our Learn Library, where we regularly share stories about the incredible impact of the powerful GlobalGiving community. We hope you’ll stay in touch.
With immense gratitude,
Chase + the GlobalGiving team

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.
We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.
They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
