Update from Tonga

Nesi, Tonga
Nesi, Tonga

Tropical Cyclone Gita (TC Gita) struck Tonga on 12 February 2018, affecting an estimated 80,000 men, women, boys and girls (about 70 per cent of the entire population). The Category Four cyclone was the most severe tropical cyclone ever to make landfall in Tonga and caused destruction to homes, water supply systems, farming land and livelihoods.

Nesi, 52, lives on the geographically large but lowly populated island of ‘Eua in the Kingdom of Tonga with her husband and three teenaged daughters. Nesi and her family witnessed and were impacted by the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Gita in February 2018. Their household was severely impacted and resulted in the loss of their house and significant damage to their plantation. Nesi and her family have received a tent, tarpaulins and shelter kit.

Working together to meet the needs of affected people, MORDI Tonga Trust, Live and Learn and CARE Australia formed a partnership to deliver emergency aid and recover support to the most vulnerable households across Tongatapu and ‘Eua. After reaching over 500 households and 3,500 people in initial emergency aid distributions, we are now shifting to working with communities on emergency recovery projects targeting a total of 850 HH on Tongatapu and ‘Eua islands from April – August 2018.
