By Professor Andrew Rowland | Chair of the Board of Trustees, SicKids
At the time of writing this report there have been over 100 million cases of COVID-19 around the world and very, very sadly over 2 million people have died. When writing the first report of 2020 we could never have imagined that would be the introduction to the first report of 2021.
We have been following the COVID-19 situation in Cambodia very carefully. There have been 463 reported cases of COVID-19 in Cambodia and zero deaths. Due to strict entry control requirements (and exit control requirements from the UK), introduced for public health reasons, we had to postpone the 2020 in-person visits to Cambodia, but that has not stopped us having regular contact with our colleagues on the ground in-country. We will be keeping the situation carefully under review throughout 2021 and hope that, later this year, a visit to Cambodia will be possible.
However, the lack of in-person visits has not stopped SicKids' work! Our fundraising continues and, as we wrote in our last report, we are working in a partner organisation in Cambodia to provide sensory equipment in the north of the country. The next report you receive will be the first one of our new financial year and we hope to be able to give you further details of our current Cambodia project at that time.
In the meantime our 2020 annual report is now available from the Charity Commission for England and Wales. You can locate it by searching for SicKids (1164131) on the Charity Commission website.
Thank you for your continued interest and your support of SicKids - we really do appreciate it and we're looking forward to bringing you some positive news regarding our work in Cambodia very soon!
Despite everything that is going on in the world at the moment I'd like to wish you a very happy and safe 2021 and I'm hopeful, with the arrival of SARS-CoV-2 immunisations, we can finally see a glimmer of light which marks the path to exiting from this terrible global pandemic. It is, of course, essential that the global nature of the pandemic is not forgotten and that a global solution is required, including global provision of immunisations.
Best wishes,
Andrew
