As Technology Partnership moves forward we are working to be mindful and strategic with the role of volunteers in our work. Recently, a volunteer visited Meru and worked with teachers at several of our schools to help "demystify" technology. Shravan Joshi has spent time in Meru before and when he approached his time there he reached out to several NGO's to see how his education and training could be most effective. He is a shining example of the type of volunteer we hope to work with!
Some things we keep in mind when working with volunteers that travel to Meru to work on our behalf:
1)Volunteers should not be replacing roles/jobs that could be done by a local community member. This can suppress the local labor market.
2)When working with children, all volunteers must be screened and aware of appropriate conduct
3) Volunteers must abide by TP rules of conduct even though they are not a paid employee
4)Volunteers are there to bring their knowledge and expertise and to pass it on, not create dependency on it.
We are looking for more volunteers to build on the relationships that Shravan started and to create meaningful relationships across cultures, which the world needs more of these days.
