The Breaking Gender Barrier project beneficiaries were selected based on the location of the teams, participants were mainly girls and women aged 11 to 35 years old. In this project the selection was not based on religion, tribe, political affiliation or race. We were very inclusive in our selection. The project so far has attracted 400 participants out of the 800 participants that we were targeting. The remaining number will be achieved through our subsequent activities that we are planning as an organization. This project focuses on developing female role models, female leaders and female inclusion through sports. The members of the community were very much impressed by project since it had taken a long time for girls and women to engage in meaningful projects since the COVID 19 pandemic affected the world. This pandemic led to little or no sporting activities in the slums of Mathare and its environs. The community members were very appreciative when they saw Mathare Foundation in collaboration with the French Embassy taking a lead role in promoting girls and women to become role models and female leaders through sports. The European Union, United Nations and the Commonwealth have sports policies and frameworks. These policies and frameworks are very important. For instance the EU sports policy developed in 2019 states that it is important for governments and funding agencies to funds sporting activities since sports is a tool that is used to improve the wellbeing of people. Sports is a contributor to SDG 3 –Good Health and Wellbeing. . Sports is a very powerful tool that is been used in the mobilize girls and women so as to ensure gender equality is being achieved. Keeping in mind that Gender Equality, Sustainable Development Goal number 5. At the local level we need to achieve this so that we can contribute to the global agenda. The feedback from the community was that our incessant efforts to ensure that we reduce the gender parity at the grassroots level was very commendable. In this project, we have depicted that excellence knows no gender since the girls were able to not only play football but also take part in different workshops on leadership, coaching, gender balance among others. Girls and women have to be unconditionally at table when their issues are being discussed.
