Project Report | Jan 30, 2021
Our first report of 2021

By Professor Andrew Rowland | Chair of the Board of Trustees, SicKids

At the time of writing this report there have been over 100 million cases of COVID-19 around the world and very, very sadly over 2 million people have died. When writing the first report of 2020 we could never have imagined that would be the introduction to the first report of 2021.

We have been following the COVID-19 situation in the UK very carefully. Although children generally do not suffer the same significant physical effects of COVID-19 that some adults do, they are, of course, affected in other ways particular as family members and friends become unwell with COVID-19.

At the present time in the UK all emergency care settings have introduced strict infection-control requirements because of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and we are therefore considering the best way in which to provide sensory equipment - consistent with these requirements - given how essential this is for children who attend urgent and emergency care facilities.

We have funding ring-fenced for at least one new sensory space in an emergency department in Nort West England and we'll continue to work with our chosen site to find out the best way to install this equipment, consistent with the COVID-19 infection control requirements.

Our fundraising continues and we hope, when you receive the next report from us (which will be the first one of our new financial year) we'll be able to give you further details of our current UK projects at that time.

In the meantime our 2020 annual report is now available from the Charity Commission for England and Wales. You can locate it by searching for SicKids (1164131) on the Charity Commission website.

Thank you for your continued interest and your support of SicKids - we really do appreciate it and we're looking forward to bringing you news of SicKids' work throughout 2021.

Despite everything that is going on in the world at the moment I'd like to wish you a very happy and safe 2021 and I'm hopeful, with the arrival of SARS-CoV-2 immunisations, we can finally see a glimmer of light which marks the path to exiting from this terrible global pandemic.

Best wishes,

Andrew
