As our class prepared for a training and rehearsed scenes depicting homophobic bullying and gender bias, we had some special visitors from Hawkins-Mikita! Hawkins-Mikita is a social innovation firm that helps their clients develop effective philanthropic and advocacy strategies for issues they care about.
One of their clients, actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, is active in supporting LGBTQ civil rights, has a passion for theater and is a compassionate advocate for youth affected by homophobia in schools. He was intrigued by what he has heard about our program and spent time learning how we use theater to help teachers learn to create safety for LGBTQ students.
Our students were thrilled to meet Jesse and eagerly told him how the program impacts teachers and administrators. They also shared how their participation in the class and in the program has changed their own lives.
It was a lot of fun and we were honored to have someone we all admire devote his time to us!
