Meet Sonia, a single mom who recently secured a home in CHAT housing for her and her 2 children. Two years ago, Sonia fled a violent situation with her children. After staying with friends and receiving support services she found a fulltime job and an apartment. Her life was looking up. Soon after her daughter got sick. She was let go from her job. The medical bills piled up. Her daughter tragically passed away. An eviction soon followed. Luckily, they found the support of a local shelter. With support Sonia was able to regain employment. The eviction and her low credit score made it impossible to secure rental housing. Her case manager at the shelter suggested Sonia look into CHAT because it offered the support services she needed to get back on her feet in addition to housing. She met with CHAT and learned more. Then she took the children to go and view the house. She signed a lease and was handed a key, a very emotional moment. Her two remaining children have their own fully furnished rooms, and they can walk to school. It’s a long journey of healing but this family is on their way. You never know someone’s story. This is one of hundreds of stories about residents who have been saved from homelessness by CHAT
At CHAT, providing housing is just the beginning. We know that putting an end to homelessness also requires essential supportive services as you’ll see in Sonia’s story on this page. We recognize that housing insecurity is one of the most critical issues facing our community, and we are committed to exploring innovative ways to create affordable housing. CHAT is truly a part of the community, uniting to provide solutions to support vulnerable populations. In the last year CHAT served over 274 residents throughout the community. CHAT is opening an innovative 20 cabin village emergency shelter “Everhart Village” in partnership with Butte County Behavioral health. As we approach the holidays and the end of the year, we hope you will consider making a donation. Your support does make our community a better place. This is our most important annual appeal, and your response helps us determine our budget for the upcoming year, which in turn enables us to change lives through housing and supportive services. We rely on our sustaining donors, who provide us with a reliable source of income. Visit chicohousingactionteam.net to learn more about how you can help us achieve our vision of creating a community where everyone has access to safe and affordable housing.
