30,000 People Bike to Work!

One day each year, on a May morning, Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition encourages commuters to leave their cars at home and join tens of thousands of their fellow Bay Area residents in biking to work. The streets are filled with people on bikes, and energizer stations dot the landscape, staffed by volunteers eager to pass out treats and encouragement. Bike to Work Day is a vision of what the morning commute should look like: parents and children, teachers, restaurant workers, politicians, CEOs, all doing the unimaginable – enjoying their trips to work and school.

Thanks to our members and supporters, we are able to work with cities, businesses, and the bicycling community to encourage new riders to take more trips by bike and make this one day into a lifestyle.

After months of planning and coordinating, we celebrated Bike to Work Day on May 14. Were you one of the 30,000 people in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties who biked to work that morning despite the weather forecast? Maybe you even stopped by an energizer station to refuel on your way. Bike to Work Day has been celebrated in our two counties for the past 21 years and was created to help encourage new cyclist to ride their bike to work instead of using their car.

That morning in Santa Clara County alone, we helped organize 87 energizer stations along the roadways of major bicycle commuting routes to supply food, goodies, and good cheer to help encourage cyclists. It is through events like this that we are able to provide a welcoming invitation into the bicycling community to those that are hesitant to give it a try.

With your support, we are able to continue this encouragement year-around through our programs, advocacy campaigns, and events. Thanks!
