The last quarter of the year Hope Trust has been engaged in counselling a number of different issues, including suicidal ideation and self harm.  We also completed another successful bereavement support group in the Galway area.  It was moving to see those attending responding to help and support that was offered, some having been stuck in their grief for many years.

We also like to be involved within the community to identify with those who may be struggling or feeling isolated, to that end we organised the following.

The Hope Trust undertook a Candlelit Walk from Athlone Castle to the Town Centre on the 31st October to show public support and solidarity for those who have lost loved ones to suicide.  Around 40 people gathered outside the Castle to proceed on a candle lit walk to the Athlone town centre.  The main focus of the walk was for the local churches and community to demonstrate support for those who have been affected by the loss of a loved one to suicide.  The event was planned by Hope Trust, a local charity formed to offer a Christian response to the high suicide and self-harm issues in the Midlands.

The evening ended with flute music followed by prayer for all husbands, wives, children, brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, colleagues and friends who are grieving a loss.  Thanks were also offered and prayer for the Gardaii, emergency services and volunteers who respond to traumatic incidents.  Lastly prayer was offered for all those who are struggling with suicidal thinking and an appeal for them to hold on, reach out for help and believe that there is a purpose for their lives, even if they have lost sight of hope at this moment.

Whilst 2019 reflected a suicide rate that had decreased over past years, there are still too many deaths.  Thankfully there are more people responding to calls to talk or receive counselling.

We thank GlobalGiving and those who donate to our charity for your part in helping us to reach out to those who are struggling.

God bless you and your families!

relaxing after the walk!
relaxing after the walk!

A group of 20 supporters joined forces either walking or cycling 14 kilometres on a warm sunny Irish morning at the end of June! We enjoyed a rare morning without showers and raised a wonderful €2000 towards the work of counselling and the running of support groups.  So very much needed and appreciated.

During September we will be launching a new proposed bereavement support group, this time in the Galway area.  We meet for an introduction evening, followed by 8 weeks of group contact with 2 group facilitators.  Past participants have often struggled with complex grief due to traumatic loss or unspoken and hidden sorrow.  It was a privilege to walk alongside them as they bravely chose to face some of these issues and move forward in their grief.  The key element is in creating a confidential and supportive environment where participants feel safe enough to share their stories and we hope and trust that we will enjoy that safety again this next group.  Our last group enjoyed so much support together that they continue to meet from time to time in a social setting and to touch base with one another.  So we hope for a repeat in Galway!

We continue to meet with people for counselling who are struggling with difficult life issues and feel overwhelmed by their circumstances.  Having someone to listen to their struggles is vital in helping them gain perspective again and we are grateful to all our sponsors for donations received which have helped us to maintain this service.

Thank you for your support.

God bless you.

Ripples through the community
Ripples through the community

A local group in the Athlone community in the midlands of Ireland are planning a 12 km walk / ride from Athlone to Heritage Park in Moate.  This is to highlight the need for support of those with mental health issues and to fundraise for Hope Counselling.  The event should culminate in a picnic at the park but the long term benefits will be felt by the community as monies raised are used to help people needing counselling.

We are very encouraged by this - as those involved with Hope Trust experience the support both financially but more importantly as a partnering and working alongside us to bring relief.

We have experienced the ongoing support of GlobalGiving and the various benefactors in the same way.  Knowing that there are people unknown to us who would care enough to reach out a helping hand to someone else in a different country who is struggling, is very heart warming.

We continue to offer counselling in Athlone, Galway and Roscommon.  We hope to increase this in the coming months and look forward to reporting in the next quarter progress towards this.

Thank you once again for your ongoing support, good wishes and encouragements!

God bless you

Happy St Patrick's Day
Happy St Patrick's Day

There are many who are preparing for another St Patrick's Day parade, to celebrate everything 'Irish' as well as to honour the country's patron saint.

Hope Trust, as an Irish Charity, are proud of their heritage and would like to mark and celebrate the many who have given to us over the past three years.  It would be an honour to remember, and share with you, part of St.Patrick's breastplate prayer.  We would hope to bless you with this Irish blessing and to trust that you will experience some strength yourself as you need it.

Thank you for your support of us as we seek to support those who have lost hope in life.

I arise today, through
The strength of heaven,
The light of the sun,
The radiance of the moon,
The splendor of fire,
The speed of lightning,
The swiftness of wind,
The depth of the sea,
The stability of the earth,
The firmness of rock.

I arise today, through
God's strength to pilot me,
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's host to save me
From snares of devils,
From temptation of vices,
From everyone who shall wish me ill,
afar and near

We have found ourselves really busy from day one of 2019 and are encouraged by an increase in numbers of people seeking counselling.  Paradoxically it is sad that people find themselves in a place where they need help, but it is good that they are seeking support to work through issues.

We have met with a group of people during January who are eager to attend a Bereavement Support Group.  We will be running this in Athlone in the Midlands and also plan to run another later in the year in Galway.  We know that some attending have experienced deep and painful losses and are really wanting support to reconcile their loss.

Your support and contributions have continued to be an enormous blessing to our small charity and have really assisted us in extending help into the community.  This has covered room hire for our groups and some of the counsellor expenses incurred through offering counselling.

We are in the process of developing some new programmes which we hope to introduce this year.  With an increase in adolescent suicide and self harm we are proposing introducing some workshops on adolescent mental health.  We hope to keep you updated on this new project.

Please know that you are making a difference to people here in Ireland!

Thank you
