Violence against children is a serious problem in Kenya today. Approximately one-third of children have experienced physical or sexual violence by the time they are 18. Despite the great need, due to funding limitations and capacity, counseling and support services are nearly non existent for children. This project will address this gap; providing routine, quality counseling services to 20 orphans and vulnerable children living in our rescue center in Kibera - one of Africa's largest slums
Rates of violence against children are high in Kenya. Particularly vulnerable are orphaned children. Many of these children have experienced abuse (physical and sexual) or severe neglect in their homes. As a result, they struggle from a profound sense of loss, grief, fear and anxiety. They are more likely to experience higher levels of depression and lower self-esteem, which ultimately impedes their development. Despite these challenges, quality counseling services are virtually non existent.
Healthy Minds, Happy Hearts will introduce counseling services to 20 children from our own rescue center by a trained provider in a safe setting. The counselor will offer two, one-hour sessions per week over the course of one year. Sessions will be tailored to the individual needs of the children and incorporate both group and individual therapy, Counseling will address the children's emotional needs and equip them with skills to manage the trauma and grief they have experienced in their lives.
This project will enable children who have experienced abuse to properly grieve, build coping mechanisms and discuss behavior problems that result from past abuses (e.g. risky sexual behaviors). So often overshadowed by "basic needs" (e.g.,shelter and food), counseling is essential in promoting children's overall psychological and emotional wellbeing, as well as their physical and mental development. Counseling will help children feel protected, establish trust and build hope for their future.
