A year has passed since a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the southwest peninsula of Haiti, leaving more than 650,000 people in need of emergency humanitarian assistance.
CORE responded to the crisis in less than 24 hours, providing medical supplies, debris removal equipment and other critical resources to the area.
With our Haitian-led staff and local NGO partners, we ran a large-scale relief operation to meet the immediate needs of the Haitian people, while also creating a foundation for long-term relief programs.
With our partners, CORE created a multi-phase program designed to meet the urgent shelter, WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) and food security needs of households in Nippes, Sud, and Grand'Anse.
During Phase 1, CORE and our partners helped repair and build 8 SAEPs (water supply systems) that now provide clean, drinkable water to more than 3,360 families. We trained 386 Haitians as carpenters to help us properly install E-shelter kits for 9,750 families. As a result, an estimated 46,500 people now have reliable shelter. CORE also hired 4,124 local Haitians to help clear debris, deliver hygeine kits, and build temporary shelters. These community-led initiatives have helped stimulate the local economy.
Today, out Haitian-led long-term recovery efforts continue to provide durable relief and build back impacted communities stronger than ever. With the support of our donors, CORE has continued to help the people of Haiti have sustainable resources when disaster strikes again. We will continue to lead the relief efforts and help the Haitians come back stronger than ever.
