Project team is working on closing out the paperwork for our recent implementation trip. We installed a rain harvesting system consisting of gutters and two tanks. We have spoken with the community and the system seems to be working without issue and they seem to be pleased.
We are also working on grants and other sources of funding to secure money for the next phase, installing sand filters at the point of use (within households). Funding will be used to purchase slow sand filters and send team members to Corail Lamothe to install the filters and provide training. We hope to install on the order of 60 filters and have been working with Hands Helping Haiti (filter vendor in Jacmel). The filters will cost approximately $80 per filter including transportation.
Many of the health concerns in the community are related to poor drinking water quality. The sand filters remove pathogens and suspended solids from collected water to improve the quality of the water. The improved water quality should help to improve the overall health of the community.
We hope to send team members in January/February of 2013 and again in May/June of 2103 to install filters (30 filters each trip). Once the filters have been installed we plant to follow up with two monitoring trips; one in December 2013 and another in December 2014. Health Assessments will be completed on each trip to track the effectiveness of the sand filters.
