Heading back to the Mexican Caribbean in the Mesoamerican Reef region, we have good news to share.
In follow up to the support provided to Amigos de Sian Ka’an and the work they developed with Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature A.C. (FMCN in Spanish) and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP in Spanish) since 2018, we are proud to announced that they have developed the National Action Plan for the control of lionfish in Mexico and have established the Local Committee for its control in the Yucatan Peninsula, the Mexican Caribbean, and the Gulf of Mexico.
The elaboration of the plan was achieved by not only involving the Mexican government and directorates of the natural protected areas of the Coastal Plain and Gulf of Mexico, Yucatan Peninsula, and the Mexican Caribbean, but also the communities, fisher cooperatives, academia, civil society organizations and key actors. Two workshops, one in September 2021 and the second in February 2022, were developed to get feedback from the participants and to share the work developed so far. After these workshops and the updating of the plan with the feedback provided, on February 10th 2023, the action plan was socialized with fishing communities, civil society organizations and federal and state government agencies. On this date, the “Monitoring Committee for the implementation of the National Action Plan for the Management and Control of Lionfish in Mexico” was created, integrated by representatives from government, academia, research organizations and civil society organizations. The aim of this Committee is to coordinate, through social participation, the implementation of actions established in the National Action Plan in response to the invasion of lionfish in Mexico’s reef system.
These have been major achievements and they contribute to the fulfillment of the objectives established in the Regional Strategy for the Control of Lionfish in the MAR. We appreciate your help, for all of this has been possible thanks to your support.
Thank you
The MAR Fund Team.
