OperationREAD was created to provide literacy support to schools and the Mongu community in of schoolchildren to read and general. More specifically the OperationREAD GlobalGiving campaign was designed to help provide the funding needed to teach out of school children to read a well as the construction of a library.
In addition to out of school children, OperationREAD was expanded to include children in school that were struggling to read. With funding from donors though GlobalGiving, a piece of land was also acquired for the construction of a library.
The program however has encountered challenges in reaching its fundraising goals, as s result, the program has been suspended in ten schools and will currently run only at the local library.
Even with funding challenges, we continue to make progress. While the number of beneficiaries has reduced considerably with the suspension of the program schools, we continue to reach the community’s most vulnerable providing them with an opportunity for learning that would otherwise be denied to them.
Forty students have been enrolled into the upcoming classes being twenty children and adults. The classes are scheduled to in Mid May. It is hoped that the reading program will resume in the schools with the availability of the much needed resources.
We continue to encourage new and previous donors to consider rendering their financial support to help meet program objectives.
