Our organization knows that technology is taking over the world and we do our best to keep up with the times. Children as young as 2 years are able to use mobile phones through self-learning. This opens up room for more opportunities in terms of IT jobs and this is why young people need to learn basic computer skills before they can be completely competent when learning to code and design.
Through our Child and Youth Development and Career Development programmes, we offer a range of computer skills – basic computer skills, basic coding, IT Essentials and End-User computing.
End User Computing at Afrika Tikkun
The purpose of end-user computing is to provide students with a basic knowledge of how to operate computers. Students are equipped with the knowledge to gather, process, distribute, and manage information using the basic and intermediate features of the applicable software.
Activities implemented for the reporting period include MS-Excel 2013, MS PowerPoint 2013, MS Outlook 2013 and MS-Access 2013.
ICT Academy at Afrika Tikkun
Over the period of July – September 2018, the ICT Academy has covered various courses starting with the Basic Technical/NOC Fundamentals – Gen 4.0 training. In this course, students learnt computer basics, computer networking and key technologies that underpin Enterprise and Internet Service Provider (ISP) network environments.
Pupils then moved on to IT Essentials where they learnt the fundamentals of computer and career skills for entry-level IT Jobs. The IT Essentials course includes hands-on facilitators in labs to provide practical experience to prepare the pupils for enterprise networking. The course also covered basic network vulnerabilities and ways to mitigate them.
The Fortinet Network Security Expert (NSE) is a new, eight-level certification programme designed for technical professionals interested in independent validation of their network security skills and experience. The pupils were familiarised with products offered under Fortinet and the different security solutions. Pupils in the course received a certificate in Sales for NSE 1-3.
Pupils are currently doing the CCNA Routing and Switching course, which has been broken down into four parts (CCNA 1-4). Pupils have already completed CCNA 1 (Introduction to Networking) and CCNA 2 (Routing and Switching essentials).
Pupils will complete the CCNA 3 and 4 modules by the end of 2018 and complete the NSE 4 early 2019, while completing their work integrated learning programme.
In total 25 young people are currently enrolled into the programme.
These training opportunities are our way of preparing young people for the 4th Industrial Revolution. Computers are a critical part of the journey of growth and knowledge. Without a sufficient number of computers we are not able to provide these critical skills to young people at our Centres.
