Dear Carolina for Kibera family, friends, and supporters,
Mothers and youth children are thriving in Kibera because of YOU! Nearly 1,000 women, including women who were pregnant or currently breastfeeding, received maternity and reproductive health care through CFK’s health initiatives last year.
Regrettably, maternal death is higher in Kibera than many parts of Nairobi and Kenya more broadly. Without access to proper antenatal care at the early stages of pregnancy, pregnant Kiberan women are at higher risk for miscarriage, losing babies during delivery, or even losing their own lives because of complications. We are happy to share that, thanks to your support, our program saw 346 healthy deliveries and our community health volunteers conducted 1,384 post-partum care visits with mothers and their newborns.
Local speaker and father of four, Lucas, addressed how men and fathers can better support breastfeeding and be an advocate for the women in their lives during our 2017 World Breastfeeding Week event. Lucas, who participated in several of CFK’s community care sessions, had learned information about the importance of and many benefits of breastfeeding. While his first three children were not exclusively breastfed, he wanted to ensure his fourth child had this opportunity and looked to ways to better support his wife. More than 1,000 women and community members joined the event celebrating the importance of breastfeeding for overall health and well-being of mother and child.
