Thank you for helping Xin seeing again!

By Sandra So | Senior Development Manager

Orbis thanks you very much for your tremendous support extended to our comprehensive child eye health network in China. During 4-year program, Orbis would partner with Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center (SEDPTC) to set up an international child eye health training center in Shanghai to support underdeveloped areas starting from Ningxia. With SEDPTC’s technical support, the project would help Ningxia Eye Hospital (NEH) to construct a comprehensive child eye health service network in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region to strengthen the capability of Ningxia’s pediatric ophthalmology and low vision rehabilitation services.

Every child deserves an equal right to sight. The project aims to improve children’s quality of life and increase educational opportunities by reducing the burden of child eye diseases, like uncorrected refractive errors, and enhancing their local access to high-quality pediatric ophthalmic and low-vision services in Ningxia.

With all donors' generous support, we manage to conduct research, eye training and eye screening with a comprehensive approach in Ningxia:

  • To strengthen capacity of pediatric eye care, optometry and low-vision services, training, and research in Ningxia Eye Hospital
  • To establish child eye health services by focusing on refractive errors and other simple eye diseases in 10 counties/prefectures in Ningxia

Life Transforming Story

Xin, a child living at Pengyang County in Ningxia, originally had a happy childhood. Like many other families, dad and mom were so happy to welcome a newborn baby even though their family was very poor. Unfortunately when Xin was 5-month old, a tumor was found at her left kidney and worse still, she was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma. Sadly, parents could not afford to bring Xin for proper eye medical treatment and when she was getting older, eye pressure was getting higher and higher causing her eye swelled up. Her classmates always teased her with a “cow-eye”, she was really upset and refused to go to school.

In 2021, with the support of “Orbis Comprehensive Child Eye Health Network” Program, Xin can finally undergo eye surgery and eye pressure is now under control. Her eye does not swell up anymore and she becomes more confident in making friends with the others. Now, she can join her friends drawing and playing happily at school.

Thank you for making Xin smile again!

Best Regards,

Orbis Team
