Meaningful acts of compassion that make a difference

By Jo Giles | Head Angel

We have recently just celebrated Mother’s Day in South Africa, reminding us once again of the incredible strength, resilience and love that mothers show, especially those caring for vulnerable and critically ill children in hospital wards every day.

As part of our ongoing Compassionate Palliative Care in State Hospitals Project, Footprints 4 Sam recently completed further upgrades to the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) Ward at Rahima Moosa Mother & Child Hospital to help create a more comfortable, dignified and supportive space for mothers and their premature babies.

The refurbishment included the installation of secure lockers for mothers, upgrades to the shared kitchen area, improved staff administration spaces and repairs to bathroom facilities to ensure the ward remains clean, functional and welcoming. Footprints 4 Sam also continues to fund 24/7 WiFi access in the ward, helping mothers stay connected to loved ones during lengthy hospital stays.

In addition, Kya Crafts, one of NPO "Project Purpose’s" upliftment and skills development projects, created 50 beautiful knitted tracheotomy bears for Footprints 4 Sam. The talented team created these colourful bears that will support families of children living with tracheostomies and will also be used as training tools for parents, caregivers and healthcare professionals through the Trust’s Trachease Programme. As part of our commitment to strengthen the NGO sector, we are proud to support initiatives like Kya Crafts that combine skills development with meaningful impact.

Our Trachease Programme has already helped save countless lives by educating families and healthcare workers on how to safely care for a child with a tracheostomy, while also advocating for earlier tracheostomy interventions where medically necessary as a life-saving procedure.

It is often the small things, a warm space, practical support, a sense of dignity, or simply feeling less alone that make the biggest difference to families facing incredibly difficult journeys.

None of this would be possible without your support. To our donors and supporters, thank you for walking this journey with us and for helping us continue Sam’s legacy of compassion, humanity and hope. Your generosity allows us to keep creating meaningful change in the lives of children, families and healthcare professionals who need it most.

Until next time!
