Community Rainforest Restoration in Madagascar

Community Rainforest Restoration in Madagascar

Summary

TPC's novel reforestation technique, "Foxhole Forests", in Nouvelle Aire Protegee Ivohiboro (Ivohiboro NAP), Madagascar leverages current ecological conditions and social enterprise programs to create a sustainable reforestation initiative that improves local livelihoods. To date, this restoration program has provided vital supplemental income to more than 6,000 local community members that have attributed this project to helping their families survive climate-driven famines in the region.

Challenge

In a deeply impoverished region of Madagascar, communities have few economic options, nearly all of which are not sustainable. Exacerbated by climate change and rampant wildfires, the shrinking forests upon which millions depend are being rapidly eroded, greatly increasing the susceptibility of the population to famine, drought, and other disasters. This represents a dual crisis for the people and unparalleled biodiversity of Madagascar, both increasingly threatened with extinction.

Solution

This project represents a key shift towards a sustainable economy that promotes forest stewardship and restoration, creating new jobs that directly train local communities while restoring rainforest in a novel, efficient, and ecologically innovative way. In tandem with TPC's other social enterprise projects (e.g. voatsiperifery, marula oil, etc.), funding temporary restoration positions for large teams (200+ people/day) maximizes the number of people tangibly benefitting from restoration.

Long-Term Impact

Since the project's initiation in 2020, we have received direct community feedback crediting TPC's restoration project as key for surviving famine, allowing purchase of food and supplies, and sending daughters to school for the first time. Local practices have begun to shift away from fire setting, and rice growers adjacent to the forest have reported a 3X increase in production. This project is thus showing huge potential to completely reshape reforestation and livelihoods in the region.
