Preemptive Medicine: A challenging start

Three of the 2023 EcoSwell Medical Electives

The Community Health Worker program has been pushed forward by multiple medicine and public health interns from the EcoSwell Volunteer Internship Program, some of whom have directly attended patients in Lobitos. The initial idea was presented to EcoSwell three years ago and the design has since then been perfected through qualitative interviews with the Lobitos Medical Centre staff and patients.

From 2022 to the end of 2023, EcoSwell has presented the Community Health Worker program to four grant opportunities with the following institutions: The Canadian Embassy Fund for Local Initiatives, the Conservation, Food and Health Foundation (CFHF), the Inter-American Foundation (IAF), and the Foux Foundation. The feedback from these organizations has led us to redesign the program toward a public policy-oriented initiative with the potential to inform research efforts related to the impact of preemptive medicine on anemia, diabetes, and heart disease.

We are still looking for the necessary funding to start with the project implementation, but these application efforts have strengthened the project design and led us to begin crowdfunding through GlobalGiving. This crowdfunding allows us to propose match-funding amounts to future grant givers and sponsors, opening up new opportunities for the project to become a reality.

In the following months, we will continue to apply for funding opportunities and receive international medical students in the locality to help the understaffed medical post.
