Working with our partners, Medical Relief and Education International we recently held education classes and a pediatric clinic in the semi-rural community of Fond de Negres.
The classes provided parents with the basic information they need to keep their children healthy, addressing issues like nutrition, the importance of hand-washing, and the need to vaccinate. Teachers then went on to discuss illnesses that are common and how they can be treated at home versus illnesses which are very serious and must go immediately to the hospital.
Once a parent attended the class, they received paperwork so that they could take their child into the clinic where a team of doctors, nurses, and medical students assessed each child’s needs and provided and addressed any issues.
In total, the classes educated 357 adults in the basics of keeping children healthy, and 616 children were seen in the clinic.
While the clinic was a huge success, we’re most excited about the long-term effects of the classes. As Haiti has the highest under five mortality rate in the western hemisphere, educating parents on how to avoid life threatening, preventable illness is essential.
We’d like to continue working with the community of Fond de Negres to provide on-going education on other aspects of health, clinics, and health support, but we need your help to fund our work.
Please let your friends and families know about our project and why you support health education in Haiti.
Thanks so much for your support, and warmest regards from Haiti!
