Over the last year, we have been building new friendships and relationships in a new cemetery community. In one of our times there, several of the women expressed that they would like to learn how to read and write so they could better navigate the city and daily life.
So, we decided to offer a literacy class for the women there, thinking there might be a handful of women interested. Instead, 16 of them showed up! Our team has tried to make each lesson fun, engaging, and relevant to their daily needs. The women are enthusiastic about learning, and there is lots of laughter and joy surrounding their weekly lessons!
Schools are mostly still online or a hybrid of online and at home, and parents sometimes don’t always know how to support the education needs of their children. The parents asked if there could be some homework support.
To meet this need, we’ve opened up small group tutoring sessions in both cemetery communities to help the children and parents with individualized homework help. Right now, we have 9 tutoring groups, with children ranging from elementary through high school. We are celebrating the learning in these communities!
