Otters are not the only animals trafficked in Vietnam. Many other species are also threatened by illegal trade, including birds. Did you know that the exploitation of birds for commercial trade is one of the greatest threats to a list of species that is rapidly growing?
As you are likely to be aware of now, being a supporter of Monitors work, the phrase "crisis" doesn't even begin to descrive the situation for threatened birds in illegal trade, particularly lesser-known species.
Recently, we completed a study that took a closer look at the online bird trade in Vietnam. Just like otters sold online over social media platforms for pets, bird too are similar traded online. In less than a month, we found 834 birds of at least 50 species.
Of this number, almost all were birds native to Vietnam - highlighting the impact that trade is having on Vietnam's local species.
Thank you for your continued support. With your help, we are making a difference, but we need to do much more. If you witness protected wildlife for sale, or in someone's possession, please go the extra mile and report it to your local authority.
