Donor Communication & Report

Combating HIV in Kilifi, Kenya

Dear Donor,

I hope this message finds you well.

On behalf of Asante Aid for Children and Schools in Africa, I am reaching out to share our latest report on the Combating HIV in Kilifi initiative. Kilifi County faces a growing HIV crisis, worsened by poverty, stigma, and lack of awareness. Families continue to suffer out of ignorance, with many unaware of prevention methods or reluctant to seek treatment.

Although we have so far received only USD 1 through GlobalGiving, our commitment to this cause remains unwavering. With your support, we can move from planning to action—bringing awareness, testing, and treatment to vulnerable communities.

Every contribution counts:

  • USD 50 funds an HIV awareness workshop for 20 people.
  • USD 100 provides 100 HIV test kits.
  • USD 250 trains 5 peer educators.
  • USD 500 supports a mobile testing clinic.
  • USD 5,000 launches a full community program.

We invite you to read the detailed report below and consider joining us in this urgent mission. Together, we can break the cycle of ignorance, stigma, and suffering, and build a healthier future for Kilifi families.

With gratitude and hope,

Nicholas O. Ondiek

Report: Combating HIV in Kilifi, Kenya

Executive Summary

Kilifi County is experiencing a growing HIV crisis, compounded by poverty, limited awareness, and inadequate access to healthcare services. Despite national progress in reducing HIV prevalence, Kilifi remains highly vulnerable due to low literacy levels, stigma, and limited testing and treatment facilities. Families continue to suffer out of ignorance, with many unaware of prevention methods or reluctant to seek treatment.

The Combating HIV in Kilifi initiative seeks to break this cycle through awareness campaigns, community testing, and support for affected families. However, with only USD 1 received so far through GlobalGiving, implementation has not yet begun. This report outlines the urgent need, planned interventions, and appeal for donor support to make this project a reality.

Background

  • Kilifi County has one of Kenya’s highest poverty rates (49.2%), which exacerbates vulnerability to HIV.
  • Stigma and misinformation prevent many from accessing testing and treatment.
  • Youth and women are disproportionately affected, with limited access to sexual health education.
  • Without intervention, HIV continues to spread silently, deepening cycles of poverty and illness.

Current Status

  • Funds received: USD 1 (GlobalGiving).
  • Activities implemented: None yet, due to insufficient funding.
  • Community situation: Families continue to suffer from lack of awareness, stigma, and limited access to services.

Planned Interventions

With adequate funding, Asante Aid will implement:

  1. Community Awareness Campaigns – Training peer educators, hosting workshops, and distributing information materials.
  2. Mobile Testing Clinics – Bringing HIV testing and counseling directly to villages.
  3. Support for Affected Families – Linking households to treatment centers and providing psychosocial support.
  4. Youth Engagement Programs – Schoolbased HIV prevention education and mentorship.
  5. Partnerships with Local Health Facilities – Strengthening referral systems and treatment adherence.

Expected Impact

  • Increased HIV awareness and reduced stigma in Kilifi communities.
  • Improved access to testing and early treatment.
  • Empowered youth with knowledge to prevent infection.
  • Stronger community resilience against HIV and related poverty cycles.

Challenges

  • A severe funding gap has stalled implementation.
  • Persistent stigma and cultural barriers hinder open discussion.
  • Limited healthcare infrastructure in rural Kilifi.
